Being from the USA, I can only guess that it's along the same lines as what a Mexican feels when a Citizen of the USA refers to the USA by either term: "United States" or "America."
Technically, wouldn't the term "America" refer to all of both North America and South America, and to all of the territory claimed by the nations thereof?
There is no "Arctica," because there is no arctic continent: only the antarctic continent "Antarctica exists as a polar continent.

The reason that the US citizens refer to themselves as Americans is simply that the Full title of our country's name is "The United States of America". To shorten it , we can say we are "Americans". Neither Canada nor Mexico can say the same thing, even though they are both a part of North America.

Us Canadians know that people that live in the United States call their country America just like we call our country Canada. Get your atlas out and do a bit of research. Parts of your United States are further north than Canada. Do research before asking questions that prove your ignorance.

Why feel anything but pride? Whether you are in Canada, Mexico, Central or South America, or the United States, are we all not Americans? If I hear someone from South America say they are American, I take it for what it is, a mere statement of fact. So why take offense at something that is factual? Just live with it and go on and be proud to be an American, no matter which part of America you are from.

Since Canada is bigger than the US and if global warming really did turn out to be true, they should probably get used to being called America anyway because everything down there will be South America and that will make one hell of a border for 3 dozen Canucks to patrol.

I don't feel about it. I have better things to feel. I don't think it is a personal slight to Canadians or South Americans... unless... maybe they read this question and now it's just to spite those with strong feelings against their use of the term.

It annoys many of us a very great deal. I never call the U.S. of A. "America". I call it the U.S. or the U.S.A.
Of course, the majority of them can't even find their *own* country on a map, let alone *Canada*.....

What difference does it make? I'm Canadian, you're American, whatever. My place is better.
