Because it would take a thousand words or more to describe a good picture. In a picture you see color, forms, mood, etc. How do you describe a warm smile, a beautiful sunset, or whatever is in the picture? Exactly, it takes a lot of words to do so.

The reason English borrows so many words from other languages is that we don't have a word that conveys quite the specific meaning we're looking for (e.g., "chutzpah" and "schadenfreude"). And even when we do have the meaning, we're challenged to explain the concept in a way that the one or ones we're speaking to will understand. The picture of what we're trying to convey is more effective than words because it's most often a timesaver. A picture may not be worth a thousand words, but it's worth at least a sales pitch.

The question is the answer... when you look at a picture, it would take you 1000 words to describe it... if you could even do it then.!

Pictures were around before the written word and they express emotion, passion, beauty, and theme - more so than words can describe.
