A cockatoo is in the parrot family. Cockatoos usually have a crest (feathers that are on the top of their head) that can stand up or be put down to look like a pony tail. They can be white, yellow, or orange. A parrot (at least the one I think you are referring to) do not have a crest and are have more colorful feathers on their body. This is an honest answer to a questionable question.

A cockatoo is a type of parrot. A parrot is a big kind of bird. Parrots usually can talk. The reason they CAN talk is because their tongues are clipped when they're first born. Some tongues are not clipped, so then they obviously CAN'T talk! ;-)

Joe, most of the answers to your question here are inane. Here's the real answer.
A cockatoo is a subspecies of parrot. Scientifically known as Cytocenes, there are over 120 different subspecies in the parrot genus. Parrots differ from most other species of birds in that they all have hooked bills, although some other species of birds such as raptors (eagles, hawks, falcons) also have hooked beaks.
There are a dozen or more kinds of cockatoos. Molluckans, umbrellas, citrons, bare eyed, rosellas, Goffins, blue eyed, sulphur cresteds, black palms, Major Mitchell's etc, etc. There are also larger and smaller versions of most cockatoos called greater and lessers. Most are white or pink with subtle variations of yellow and orange, but not all. All have prominant crests on top of their heads which are articulated, that is, they can raise and lower the feathers in the crest. This seems to equate to the way humans use there eyebrows to indicate various emotions and reactions to stimuli.
Cockatoos vary in size from about one foot in length for the smallest like Goffins and bare eyed to around three to four feet for the lagest like the umbrellas and the black palm cockatoos.
Cockatoos are not known as being the best talkers in the parrot world (that honor would go to the African greys and the Amazons) but they can talk, some better than others. What they ARE known for is being the most affectionate of all parrots. Any cockatoo will forego food to be tickled and petted for hours on end.
Cockatoos may also be among the most diverse groups of parrots in both size and appearance. As mentioned before, most are predomintely white or pink, but the black palm cockatoo is glossy black with a huge, punk rock -like top knot (crest) with bright red around the face and a black toungue with a red tip. Quite bizzarre looking. These giant prehistoric looking birds are known for sitting at the top of hollw trees and drumming on them with sticks the've picked up from the forest floor. Imagine a whole flock of them doing this. The major Mitchell's cockatoo is also quite striking in appearance. This is a large, pink bird with a crest with orange and red stripes in it that looks exactly like an Indian chief's head dress when raised. Very regal, indeed.
There ya go. More than you ever wanted to know about the subject. I'm sure you meant the question as a joke, but what the hey! I'm obviously not a lady, so the joke's on you :^) BTW, my bird's a Goffin's cockatoo called Pink(y) Floyd. He was originally called Cowboy, but he looked in the mirror one day and said "I'm pink!" and so he is. Consequently we renamed him after my employer.
