Wow, what a great question and you have hit on a very constructive point!!
There are so many ways on which you can look upon it.
Personally I don't believe in either God or War, I think both are incredibly destructive. I would like to think that although I am a non believer, those who are brave enough to fight for what they believe in, to protect their country and family will have a pathway to their faith. There are many men and women fighting for countries now who only really have their faith keeping them going. I am sure they each pray that they will survive another day and return home safely to their loved ones. I am also sure that they are praying that the War will end soon.
If God is a man that moves with the times I am sure he understands the predicament these people are in and will give them the strength they need and a safe place to go to if the worst happens!

would it be wrong for you to defend yourself or your possessions if someone deliberately tried to kill you or take your property? Would you stand there and let them or would you try to fend them off in some way?
If someone came into your house without being invited and then decided to stay would you be ok with that?
If you believe in God you would do your utmost to please Him but first you have to understand what he is saying to you.
The first thing that you can try to sort out in your mind is serving two or more masters. God or man? One law is absolute whereby the other is relative. In one there are exceptions or allowances under certain conditions based on divine wisdom) in the other there are fluctuatiions re-interpretations, and deceptions moved by human feeling.
When you look at the situation of serving and protecting your country by way of war, ask yourself about those laws. If you want to serve and protect your country in a way that eliminates the prospect of killing there are many options open to you.
If you truly believe in God it means that you believe in the truth. It would be very meaningful for you to find out who truly initiated this fight and why.

All through the bible, God tells different people to fight one tribe or another and sometimes to kill every living creature that lives in a certain area. To fight for your country in a way is not wrong to kill if the need arises but to kill for any other reason is totally wrong. If you had a robber come into your house and was threatening your loved ones, would you kill to protect them? Would that be wrong if their lives hung in the balance of whether you took that robbers life or let him take theirs? Of course not. You would not think twice about taking that life as it is protecting what God has placed in your hands to protect. Fighting for your country is a lot different than if you wanted to go out and just kill someone. IF you want to join the military just to kill, that is wrong, but if you want to join to help preserve freedom, that is not wrong in the least.

I believe that throughout the ages, God mandated many times the defense of Israel. It isn't often that a member of the military actually has to kill an enemy (most are support staff or technical smarty-pants). I think that defending your family and countrymen from assault and all of the nastiness that accompanies an invasion is better than sitting down and allowing it to happen. Look at what has been happening in the Congo - the rape of countless women who are at the utter mercy of their attackers. That happens oftentimes in war, especially when the defending nation has been weakened by an inept army or various other disasters. Killing is usually a last resort among civilized nations; diplomacy comes first.

Defending one's land is not killing.
Killing would rather be if you did not take action to face those who want to harm you.
True, do not kill is part of the commandements.
Yet what really matters also is to look at what can provoke a situation where you would be drawn or motivated to kill.
1) Jealousy
2) Anger
3) Revenge
4) Seflishness
5) Envy
6) Vengance
7) Honor killing
and so on and forth
Maybe in your inquiry about killing, you may want to look at those 5 and more points which usually provoke intentional killings...

God's word as handed down to Moses was saying that we should not Murder.
That is different than Killing.
God's word about Killing;
"A Time for Everything"
Ecclesiastes 3.1-3
1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:
2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
I agree with what "Ramall1to" said.

i believe that it is a very sensitive issue. i think that on the one hand that killing is very wrong for any reason but on the other hand i do believe that the freedoms that we have come at a price. i think that the answers that you get will be very opinionated. i think that you have to form your own opinions based on the bible and based on what God wants. remember that God doesn't bend the rules His rules are the rules and that is the way it is. i think that you should talk to God about it and see what He says. the answer may not come right away you may have to wait for it. Good luck with that. but in the meantime i would consult y our bible and see what you can find. i would even go as far as to tell you to consult a minister at your church. good luck with that. and it is a very good question.

Killing is wrong, wars are wrong. We should never have to kill anybody. You can serve your country in many ways, war is not the only way.

IF you follow The Law, any and all KILLING is always WRONG. Period. There are no two ways about it.
We are told to OBEY the commandment "Thou shalt not kill", which applies to the conscious and intentional ceasing of Life of ALL LIVING BEINGS be they humankind, animals, beasts, fowls, creatures, plants or trees REGARLDESS for whatever reasons anyone can conjure up...
THAT is The Law.
And for doing such a heinous transgression, one must atone to the Great Creator for all the sins of KILLING done throughout one's lifetime...
Peace be with you!

When is it ok to kill.
If you don't then you will die.
Yeah God F'ed up this one didn't he.
But you see the commandment : Thou shale not kill.
Is supposed to be: Thou shale not kill unless abroad.
They took that out of the Bible some years back.
