Since you guys are already work mates, try going up to him & ask him a work related question. Pretend that it's something you desperately need his help on.
Once you get his attention, take small steps by talking to him about other stuff & share your interests.
With his friendship, you could work up the courage to ask him out & take it from there.

Just start showing interest. Talk to him. Greet him when you see him. Start with casual conversations and then ask how he would feel about getting together sometime.
I used to be very shy too, but i found that shyness does not get me very far and it certainly will not get me what it is that I want.

get his IM, chat with him (informal but effective to break ice), meet up for lunch, talk to him more often (be natural), get him for tea, for dinner, supper sessions.
Find a common hobby through chatting with him and just meet out to play. The key is to communicate and have more activities done together.

You could ask him as a co-worker to go to lunch and see how he vibes you. That way, if you ask him to go out on a date and he says 'no' you don't have to be embarrassed everyday at work.

you don't because you work with him, if it doesnt work out (and most of them don't) do you really want to have to see him at work everyday? not to mention what will you do if things get ugly between you? that happens and you'll need a new guy and a new job, thats putting all your eggs in one basket and thats never smart.

walk staright up to him on a random day and ask him out. Be spontanious. Guys like brave and outrageous girls.
