I would consider purchasing, as a start, the very good book "The Camera" by Ansel Adams. I know several people whose photo education begins and ends with this book and the other two in this series "The Negative" and "The Print". These are for conventional, film-based photography, but the first book, "The Camera" does have lots of information that would apply to digital photography as well.

Other than that, I would also suggest looking at an Intro to Photo course at a local Community College.

the best way to learn is to attend photography classes, i attended a one year program which covers most aspects of photography, and it was a great help. Books on photography are slightly over rated, they constantly need to be up dated, so many books you may read, might not be fully suitable for your needs,
but for now, photographs should be simple, and as minimal as possible, try to avoid centering everything you photograph,
every image must tell a story of some kind or have pattern,
show you pics to your friends for critique, ask for their honest opinions, constructive criticism is one of the best ways to improve your photography

You need to learn how to adjust f-stop and shutterspeed. Understanding exposure is crucial. You also need to learn how to use a camera. Try taking a photography course locally or a distance learning program like those offered by www.nyip.com or www.pcdi.com

Practice and practice shoot a lot of pictures. The best use digital because you can delete the pictures without paying too much for developing the film.
