The Navy and the Air Force are taking on Combat roles now in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. Not only SEALS and Corpsman, but normal Sailors are now doing Combat Patrols and Convoy Escort. The Air Force has been doing likewise. A large number of Army and Marine fatalities came from escorting convoys for the Navy and Air Force. The Army and Marines have begun training the Navy and Air Force personnel in the "sandbox" and forcing them to guard their own convoys.

The Navy and Air Force have both recently modified their Basic Training to be more Combat oriented. They are almost identical to Army Basic Training, with just a few variancies.

The safest place to be in Iraq is still in a tank. The Army and Marines are well trained to handle themselves when attacked. Percentage of the branches suffering casualties versus number deployed, the Army is still the safest. With a higher number killed but the highest number deployed, the odds of a Soldier coming home in a body bag is lowest. The Marines have taken the hardest hit and the Navy and Air Force are losing a high percentage of those deployed.

My husband and I were Navy corpsmen. Basically, medical assistants on the civilian sector. If you are a corpsman, you will probably go to Iraq with the Marines, because Marines don't have medics; Navy corpsmen are their medics. So, yes, they are fighting right along with the soldiers. There are some rates (jobs) in the Navy that do not require you to go with the Marines, but corpsmen, and also seabees (construction workers in the navy, also called "dirt sailors, because they rarely see a ship) do go over to Iraq.

In addition to the SEAL's being in Iraq doing their own thing and Hospital Corpsmen with the Marines, there are Construction Battalion personnel there as well. CB's are trained for combat just like any other combat unit, even though their primary task is building whatever needs building, or torn down. Also, the Navy has many of its Master-at-Arms (police) guarding and patroling off shore oil wells.

Have you heard of the Navy seals? This is a special ops unit of the US Navy that consists of navy and Marine Corps personnel. Each branch of the service has an elite, special ops unit, however the Seals are considered the very best. This unit has been around, along with the Recon Marines since before the Vietnam War.
These units were especially effective in the pre-Vietnam war when they went into the bush, in small units, to neutralize enemy forces. They are used today in the same capacity, however their assignments and activities are never broad casted. And, they do not drag along embedded news media to report their activities.

There are plenty of Sailors in combat roles on land in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they aren't just the SEALS. Saying that the Navy stays at sea is like saying the Air Force never lands.

I"m in Baghdad right now.....and yes there are sailors all over this place, as there are Air Force, Marines and Army. I don't know if they're fighting like the other soldiers are, but there is a good chance that they are. The only branch of the military that I deal with is strictly the Army. But the others who answered this really don't have any idea......cause they're not here. But I am.....and I can tell you yes.

Yes. In addition to the Navy SEALs there are now sailors who can volunteer to go to Iraq and become part of the ground forces.

I also know a corpsman or two that were imbedded in Marine Units in Iraq.

Navy seals are trained to a far higher standard than the vast majority of the US army. They are rated alongside the British SBS and SAS. As one of the leading counterterrorist units in the world they supply SEAL team six to Delta Force.

Both the USN and USAF train their manpower how to fight on land and both have people on the ground in Iraq.

Please respect these fine individuals who are risking their lives for their country.
