She is actually referred to as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is said to be the manifestation of the Virgin Mary in the Americas but more importantly she is an icon of Mexican nationalism. Miguel Hidalgo launched the Mexican independence movement in 1810 shouted "Death to bad government, and long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!" Emiliano Zapata's men wore the Virgin's image on their hats during the Mexican Revolution.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is supposedly Mary, the mother of Jesus that appeared to some children in the town of Guadalupe. Mexicans worship Mary as the mother of Jesus and place her on a more important place than Jesus in a lot of ways. It is almost as if she is their god. I do not mean to be unkind but this is only the truth as I have been told by Mexicans themselves. If you look at the bible and believe it, you find that it would be impossible for Mary to appear to them as she is dead and buried and will be raised by her son, Jesus at the last day just as all of us that follow Him will be. See 1 Thess. 4:16-17. Satan can appear to people as their long lost loved ones and he can imitate them, down to their voice and mannerisms and such and if you are not biblically grounded, you will be deceived by that and think it is really your loved one there. IF you look at Eccl. 9:5-6, you find that the dead do not know anything and that their love, hatreds, memories, are all forgotten and are no more present. Their thoughts perish at death. Then they wait for Jesus to return to wake them and take them back to Heaven. I'm pretty sure that would be Mary because like they have some legent about how she gave this guy roses and then Jesus' face appeared on some cloth so I think they respect her more than like Americans or whatever.
