as it was in hitler's army and stalin's awful crew
Hiroshima,Nagasaki, and Pearl Harbor too
acroos the sweep of history- there's a truth they never tell
There's more horror in obedience than there'd be if we'd rebel

so when they speak to you of glory, and colors bright and true
and using words like "good and evil" say it all comed down to you
when they offer you a weapon and send you out into the fray
don't obey ,don't obey

The poem is referring to the horrors of World War 2. The poem is making reference to history and what history would have been if people found honor in resisting war and or fighting and found glory in the obedience of rebeling against it.

This poem must have been written by a guy who has been in an war or has suffered a lot due to a war. or simply he might be an peace lover.

These lines ask the reader to not to obey the commands or orders of a superior of a nation who asks you to grab arms and go for battle referring that as an holy war between good and evil and commands you to war on the account of patriotism.

I personally feel that homeworks should not be done this way. anyways God Bless You.

I think this poem is questioning authority...the examples it gives Hitlers army ( who many say were blinded by the requests of a mad man). I guess this is trying to show examples of army's doing the will of one that has greatly harmed others. This could be applied today to the war in Iraq, the way soilders are fighting for something that many back home do not support.

Stand up and fight for what you believe in, there is power in numbers, & if you just allow things to happen, they will lead you like sheep to slaughter. That is what is happening in this country with the workers of America, all our good paying jobs are going overseas, as we refuse to work for $3.00 an hour as the Chinese. We have a higher standard of living, but it is happening anyway, and the rich are getting tax cuts while the poor are getting poorer, no tax cuts and have to work 2 jobs just to make ends meet. This is the end result of an unbalanced global economy. the people running these workplaces are like the New Regime. Gustapo. If you walk to the drinking fountain, they could fire you. Just as Hitler tried to analiate an entire race.

it is an anti war poem.
it says that blind obedience is wrong and u should follow ur concience.
and that gov't will stir up the people with words of glory and duty to ones country, calling the opposition evil and telling us that what we do is the right or good thing.
but in the end the choice is up to the individual.

hi, it means: even when fighting in a war sounds good (glorious) history (hitler, stalin, the nuclear bombs on japan and the bombing of pearl harbor in USA) shows that it is not good. and when people tell you to fight in the war (glory- and colors bright and true means victory ,and the flag of your country), you must say no, because war is full of horror. hope this helps, good luck.

My understandin of this poem is there will always be a dictator, Stalin falls Hitler rises, then Saddam. The poem is basically propaganda of war ! Its sayin that there will always be someone there to promote war, but if we the people stand up against the dictators and refused to fight THEIR war, then there wouldnt be any war at all???

I think it means that you most follow your own path and not the one people offer you, because most of the time it will have a negative ending. Do not go off to war.
