You don't say whether you became a British citizen, but as far as the birth certificate goes, you can always request a duplicate from the state where you were born. I don't know what's involved in that, but it's possible. My own is a duplicate (my parents got it for me, so I'm unclear on the details).
As far as all the ID/passport stuff goes, it can't hurt to contact the US embassy or consulate. This is their area of expertise, so just ask them for their help and they'll give you the right info.
Good luck!

A copy of US Birth Certificate can always be obtained. As for your US passport, a Passport is only a Travel Document. If you do not travel, as it appears you have not since your last passport expired, one does not need a Passport. Did you know that 60 million Americans have never possessed a passport in their life?
You are only British if you have undergone Naturalisation and you should have a Letter from the Home Office to state that you have been granted British Nationality. Therefore you are still a US Citizen, without a valid Passport and mislaid Imigration papers. You have a few moves to make, buster! Hope this clarifies issue.

Your first priority is to renew your US passport because it is a requirement of your UK residency to possess a valid passport. Renewals can be done through the post and a birth cert is not required to renew. You should check the rules regarding renewals at the http://london.usembassy.gov/cons_new/acs/passports/renewal.html. Review the rules, download the application form, get your passport photos taken and submit the application. You can also get a certified birth cert by writing to the county records office in which you were born.
You are probably eligible for UK citizenship provided that you have maintained your foreign national registration over the years.

You are still a US citizen. Just take your old passport to the nearest US embassy or consulate and get it renewed. If the picture is so old that it hardly looks like you, bring some intervening photos so the consul can see how you looked over time.
You are only a UK citizen if one or both of your parents were, or you were naturalized.

If you are born here, you are a citizen of the US. There will be copies of your info at the Passport office, SS Administration and the county and states offices where you were born. As long as you have not renounced your citizenship, you will have no problem replacing those. To check for eligibility information for dual British citizenship...check with your embassies or consulates.

The ridiculous thing is that 1. Why should We or Americans even need visas, given that actually and factually the U.S.A. is a colony of Gt Britain and 2. They are fighting a war with us??? madness!
and it's 14 years to qualify for a uk citizenship.

Your US passport is still good even though outdated. As for the UK now that has advantages as you can travel in the Euro peon countries easy with that. You must check if in the UK if you can carry two Passports. Did you pledge allegiance to the UK?

In order to obtain a passport in any country you have to show proof of citizenship.
So unless you have a naturalization certificate showing you changed your citizenship, you can not get a british passport.
You are an american
