Gross! Clean the litter box once and awhile. Remove and thrown out all little fill with hot water and vinegar and allow to sit.. take a scrub brush and scrub it well inside and out top to bottom.. rinse well dry and refill with litter but then scoop and clean in every two day s at very least.. we have always owned cats and have NEVER had a bug problem... that is obviously a cleanliness problem.

take it outside, take the lid off and clean out the litterbox....with an antibacterial cleaner, and possibly some bleach. let it dry completly...make sure you clean the lid too.
leave that outside to dry completly.
then go inside and clean the area around the litterbox with the same stuff, bleach is good, but dont get it on cloth...must be antibacterial. let it dry.....spray the room with bug killer...if you can, id get one of those bug bombs and leave it in there for a few hours....then open all the windows and doors and let it air out.
then put some newspaper down on the floor that the catbox and the cat will be stepping/sitting on. this prevents any traces of cat urine and cat feces from getting on the actual floor, this way you dont have to do this procedure all the time.
make sure you clean the box every few days....also...if you can get it rigged in there..my husband tied one of those tree shaped car fresheners to the inside of the box just for added protection against the smell...it actually worked..we couldnt even tell there was a cat box in the room anymore....

I feel your pain with this problem. I have been seeing those gnatbug things in the cat's box and in the cat's food. Actually, I think with us it *is* a cleanliness problem...but anyway, I seem to have gotten rid of a lot of them by waiting until they've all conglomerated for the day on the food (or whatever), spraying it all really quickly with 409 (or the cleaner of your choice), cleaning everything out thoroughly, and then vacuuming the bejeesus out of the surrounding carpet.
Now I have ants--but them, I know how to deal with.
Good luck with the evil gnat issue, and please post again if you find a good solution!

Try scrubbing the box out with lysol or bleach. And scrub down the area where you keep your box with the same thing. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's what I had to do to get rid of the bugs.
You'll want to check around the house for standing water or hidden dirt too: Those will attract gnats, especially sweet-smelling stuff.
Good luck!

No problem, just set the cat box on the kitchen table instead of under it and then you'll have something fun to watch while you eat. Personally, I'd train those gnats to go around the house picking up cat hairs so your visitors don't have to go home looking like an angora sweater. One quick fix is to put duct tape over your eyes and nose. Enjoy.

Empty the box completely and wash it thoroughly including the lid. Fill it with fresh litter. The problem should be gone.

Seriously, this is NOT necessarily a cleanliness issue; that opinion may be spoken by people who just like to be ugly and ignorant. We have had this issue twice in over 20 years of owning cats, so NOT cleanliness related for us.
