Right. Technically, AIDS is not sexually transmitted. The virus that causes it, HIV, is sexually transmitted, though.

Much the same way that you need to catch a virus to get the flu, you need to get HIV to get AIDS.

HIV can be transmitted in many ways, so we do have to be careful. Here are some ways that it can be caught.

1. Unprotected Sex - women are more vulnerable than men in this retrospect due to the fact that the man's semen (a bodily fluid) remains inside the vagina (a mucus membrane) for a longer period of time. Oral sex, Anal sex are both dangerous as well.

2. Sharing needles - drug addicts sharing needles will share bodily fluids (blood) when sharing needles.

3. Between mother and child - through the placenta and the breastmilk.

You cannot catch HIV from going to the same bathroom, breathing the same air, or simply by touching someone with HIV.

HIV will develop into AIDS at a later point as the virus attacks the imune system.

Right, but since there's no cure for HIV yet, it doesn't just go away. You might carry the virus for years and pass it on to others without even knowing you have it, but eventually it will turn into AIDS.

That's technically true. It's the same thing, AIDS is just an administrative term for when your CD4 count is under 200 or some othe marker. Whether or not you recover from that doesn't matter your clinical diagnosis is now AIDS instead of symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV.
In summary, they're the same thing, AIDS just marks the progression of the virus.
