Some people need 10 hours (or even more) their entire life. My mom gets by on 5 or 6, while I usually sleep 10 or so. It's perfectly normal.
Some trivia: Einstein slept 10 hours per night. So maybe it makes you smarter. :)

You should always sleep exactly as much as you can, within reason. Some scholars think that the average American slept for about 10 hours a night 100 years ago. The majority of Americans live in a state of constant sleep deprivation, and there is some evidence that this adds to our endemic problems with obesity, heart disease, and mood disorders like depression.
People were designed to get a lot more sleep than they do now. I get about 4 to 6 hours per night because of my job and I do OK, but don't let anyone tell you that you are supposed to sleep that little.

If you are still a teenager, teenagers need a lot of sleep as they are accommodating the changes in their life and to their bodies.
When you feel ready to cut down your sleep can you cut down your sleep gradually, at the rate of 1/2 hour an night say every month? If you are tired during the day you may have to accept you need more sleep. Some people can sleep when they have time during the week, then catch up at weekends. Try not to worry as your body will tell you how much sleep you need and it varies from person to person.

Your body will tell you how much sleep you need. The 8 hour rule is just an estimate. Some people need 10 and some can do with just 6. Each persons needs are different than yours and even then, it will change from day to day.

I would only be concerned if after you wake from your sleep you are still consistently feeling tired / exhausted for the time you are awake.
If you remain tired most of the time and need to 'nap' maybe you could look at your diet, eating 'junk' will not help healthy sleep as will taking in too much caffine or alcohol disturb sleep.
Otherwise each and every individual needs a differing amount of sleep at different times of life and this can vary from day to day as well as year by year.
Sleep Well :)

If you still feel you need 10 hours, sleep 10 hours.
You might also want to make sure your daily diet is a healthy one and that you get plenty of exercise.
Create a routine that involves bedtime at the same time every night and awaken at the same time every morning. If you are still tired, adjust the times to allow for more rest.

wish i had time to sleep for 10 hours a night, I'm lucky if I get chance to spend as much as 6 hours in bed! Sleeping is something that the more you get, the more you want. If you condition your body to sleeping 10 hours a night then you will always sleep for 10 hours a night but if you gradually start going to bed half an hour later your body will eventually adjust

If you still feel like you need a lot, then you probably still do! As for this "changeover," well, people are so different, the only REAL answer I could ethically give you is this:
WHENEVER YOUR BODY SAYS IT'S READY.

age does not tell you how many hours you need to sleep. your body tells you that. of course we cannot help but get up early because of work or school, but if you feel like you need more sleep, i suggest you go to bed earlier instead. it helps sometimes, but sometimes it does not (especially when other people around you are still awake).
im 24 and i sleep about 8 hours a night... there are times when i don't feel like 8 is enough and i need more, and there are times when i wake up an hour earlier. it depends on your lifestyle, and also stress levels -- if you are highly stressed, then you need more time to rest.
