Ironic - when the end result of a situation is not what you expected. It is the opposite, or very suprising.
Alanis Morisette's song "Ironic," is the perfect example of irony. Why? The title is "Ironic," so one would expect the song to discuss irony. Instead it just talks about things that really really suck.
Its ironic because the song has nothing to do with the title, and a title usually gives a person an idea of what the song is about. =)

I have found out that when defining the word ironic it is very good to use 3 or more examples to explain. The kind of examples used depend on the audience you are addressing

Give as much detail as possible. Explain the reasons why "it" would be considered ironic and put emphases on the examples.

I have wondered that myself. I find that the best way to explain it, is to give numerous examples of it using common things and well-known subjects pertaining to the modern world.

it comes from "Irony", and that's what the British thrive on :-)
It is the art of saying something and meaning the opposite.
The end result usually amuses them, I find British Comedy overflows with it.
In Italy we call the result of too much irony "freddura" which means "cold shower". (not literally but that's what it portrays)
In a strange way this makes sense as they call us "hot heads" ha ha ha.

It's kind of the opposite of what you want to happen. She cut her hair to buy him a watch chain. He sold his watch to buy her a comb. That's irony.
