Use Texas Toast bread (not the frozen pre-buttered kind, the loaf kind).
Make your custard about 3/4 cup milk (whole milk, please) to one egg. Add vanilla extract (the real thing).
Sautee the well-sodden slices slowly, maybe 2 minutes per side, on a griddle or pan lightly smeared with corn oil.
When they are done, sift a touch of powdered sugar over them, and serve with maple syrup (the REAL thing, now!), or plum preserves.
This is the best French toast I know how to make, and I think it is rather good. I hope you'll try it someday!

My favorite creation:
TOAST
1 big loaf (thick, not long) of French Bread cut into 3/4-1" thick slices
4-5 eggs, beaten w/:
1/2 c milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
pinch/dash of allspice
Dip slices of French Bread into egg mixture until soaked. Place in preheated skillet that has oil or butter in it (I recommend cooking over medium-low to medium heat to give a chance for the egg to cook all the way through without burning the exterior). Cook on both sides until dark golden brown. You may need to make more egg batter, depending on how saturated your toast slices are.
SYRUP (Should be prepared in advance)
Simple sauce: mix 1 cup of sugar with 1/2 cup of water in a pan on the stove. Once sugar is melted and mixture begins to simmer, lower heat and add fruit of your choice (I add slivered Granny Smith apples and golden raisins) and cook til fruit is soft. Remove from heat and cool. Transfer to serving container and place in refrigerator to allow mixture to thicken up.
To serve, lay toast out on a plate, scoop fruit on top and drizzle with extra syrup. Sprinkle with a little powdered sugar.
Will serve 4 easily.
MMMMmmmmmmmm.

What I normally do is just get two peices of bread, toast them, sprinkle with cinnamon, and drizzle with syrup and powdered sugar...or you can just make cinnamon toast and then to that because that takes better with the cinnamon already baked on the bread and dont forget lots of butter!

My childrens favorite: Scrabble your eggs, no milk, add some cinnamon and nutmeg (just a littl nutmeg), scrabble well, dip your bread, homemade bread is best, fry on griddle with butter until browned to your liking. Sprinkle a little powder sugar on top afterwards while warm if you like it like that.
