The difference in generic meds and brand named ones is that the brand ones, usually, have an extra or different ingredient that supposedly gives it that extra "oomph".
But, the basic...most important and active ingredient in both, are the same.
I took Paxil, for a while. When the generics came out, and I had to take those....I could tell a difference.
Some generics work just the same....and some do not work as well.

Personally there is a difference if I am reading this right, between zoloft and prozac(fluoxetine) . I big difference,. I have major depression and know from taking both. Zoloft made me feel less depressed but still anxious, the prozac,, that makes you strong to anything that might be hurting you, mentally, emotionally. It does take away the ability to cry at appropriate times, unless you miss your dose and you crash, 20mg is a lower dose. but I liked it until it diddn't work anymore than they up the mg. You will feel a difference if you change meds. a generic form of the same med usually no. I know in vitamins they substitute some stuff and you will notice but not with the anti depressent ones.

Switching meds doesn't usually affect a person. A lot of people that I know have had to switch antidepressants a number of times in order to find the one that works for them. If something seems strange to you about your behavior or how your feeling, talk to your doctor. As far as a difference in the generic form of Prozac, there isn't. I was originally on Prozac and then I started taking fluoxetine, I never noticed anything different. They both work the same.

There is a big difference between Prozac and Zoloft as well as all the other antidepressants out there. I have switched meds numerous times, because some seem to work, and some just don't. Even though Prozac and Zoloft both work on serotonin levels, they have different chemical makeups and one may work better for some people while the other works better for others.
Plus, when you switch from Zoloft to Prozac you have to consider the dosage -- it's not always going to be equivalent. Your doctor should know the equivalent dosage of Prozac for 100mg of Zoloft.
Also, different antidepressants work on different chemicals in the brain. For example, Zoloft and Prozac work on serotinin, but Wellbrutrin works on dopamine and Strattera works on norepinephrine. There are numerous other antidepressants on the market as well.
So I would suggest trying different meds until you find the one (or combination) that works best for you.
Good luck!

prozac was pulled by the fda as many lawsuit came out of it with people killing others or themselves. under the federal guidelines. any drug must have the same potiency as the drug is used for. the generics have to be at lest 20% differant or it would infringe on the patient. the actual healing ingredient is the patient. if you look at the guidelines, you would wonder how can the generic of the drug work then. some do as the generic is made by another company either owned by the original company or contracted to make it. most companies know there is volume in generic then the original and produce them. many generics have no effect at all as it can't have the actual ingredient without infringing on the patient. there are many drug companies that each make a differant drug but the race is to get it out first. there are many brand drugs for the same condition. just finding the right one. best of luck.

No. A generic drug is just the same as a non generic brand, only with a different name. The only difference is that a generic brand is usually cheaper. I have epilepsy and some of the prices are outrageous, but the generics work just fine. If they can find a generic for the one that I'm on now I would jump on it because right now I pay $220 and that is with insurance. Without it is $900. Hope that I helped ease your mind.

Fluoxetine is the same as prozac. No need to worry. I have been using fluoxetine 40mg for several years. I hope it works for you. I works for me.
