It depends on where you live. Ask your vet for statistics in your area. It is a good idea to treat your dog.
Heartworms are a serious disease. Dogs die horrible deaths and treating them is EXPENSIVE. You are looking at over a thousand dollars, depending on the size of the dog. Not to mention that recovery requires 6-8 WEEKS of cage rest. Meaning you have to keep you dog in a cage, only big enough for him to turn around in, all day, every day. Leash walks only to potty.
It is so much easier to give one little pill, that, by the way is completly safe, to prevent a lot of heart ache and hassel.
If you object to the cost why did you get a dog? Would you deny your child a coat in winter to keep them healthy just to save money?

i wouldn´t take the chance of not giving my dog heartworm protection, i´ve been told that it is a very painful treatment if the doggy gets sick.......there are some countries that don´t use any heartworm protection medicine because mosquitoes are not a threat to dogs.

It is VERY risky not to give your dog worm medication. They can get heartworms from mosquitoes! Trust me, I lost a VERY loved and pampered dog to them - it is not worth the heartbreak.

You need to get your dog tested for heart worms and put him/her on a heart wormer pill. It's not a gimmick. It's a very serious thing that you can't just play with,it can kill your dog very easy. Please take my advice,I know what I'm talking about because I raise, breed, train and show dogs.

it's not a simple Q; -where- U & Ur dog live, -how much Time- Ur dog spends outside, & -how Common skeeters R-, are all factors.
the more important Q? "what's it worth to me to protect my dog's life, from a preventable disease?"
since even INdoor dogs can be bitten by skeeters, it's not worth the risk, to me - treatment is WAY riskier, & more $$, than prevention.
