I've gone to the runner that goes from tree to tree. There is a lot less tangling. But, with two dog at once your going to put them on separate ends of the yard( just let them meet in the middle), or you will have a bad dog snarl problem. A fence would be best though if you have the money or if it's allowed.

Neither is very good for the dog.
If possible build them a run.
The best idea would be to put a wire cable (found at any hardware store) between two trees or post, it needs to be at least 6 feet off the ground. Attach the dog to the main cable by a 12 ft leash cable.
You will need a separate main cable for each dog if they are to be in the yard at the same time. Otherwise they will become all tangled up.
This will give the dogs some freedom of movement, make the main cable as long as possible, they should be at least 50ft each.
It is still not a good idea for the dogs, but if it is the best that can be done, the cable run is better than staking a dog out.
BE SURE THE DOG HAS SHADE, WATER, AND FOOD.

Actually, chaining a dog is a really bad idea. They see being chained as a punishment of sorts; restricted movement combined with being abandoned by the "pack leader" (that would be you, the owner). You'd be better off putting up a small fence if they are playing in the front yard or if there is no fence around. If you MUST chain them up, please, STAY WITH THEM. This way, even though they are restricted in their movements, they won't feel left behind.

DO NOT CHAIN THE DOG UP. somtimes when you chain a dog up he'll think he's getting punished. he also might become very territorial. I recomened an eletric fence the y won't hurt the dog u bury it under groud in a small or large area and when u put the speacial coller on it starts to beep when they get close to the fence and then it vibrates on there neck they don't like it and eventuly it trains them not to leave the yard
