Hey, Danny - flatulence is caused by a bacteria. Of course, Bean-o comes to mind from all their recent commercials. Natural product that fights it? Charcoal tablets. I'm not talking about chomping on a piece of coal; all drug stores and health food stores sell charcoal tablets or capsules, and their very effective. If odor is a big problem, check out flat-d.com. I understand they offer effective products.

This may take some careful observation to notice what foods cause increased gas. Keep a food diary and note excess passage of gas. Any of the gas-producing foods can be removed from your diet one group at a time until you see relief. Sorbitol and fructose are common offenders, so try these first.

If this method does not work, a more restrictive approach is to start with a very limited number of safe foods, and add one new food every 48 hours in order to determine what food or food group causes difficulty. If the offending food is found, then you can avoid eating that food or be prepared for its consequences.

If you suspect lactose intolerance is the problem, remove all dairy foods from your diet for 10-14 days to assess the effect on flatulence (using a diary). The enzyme lactase, which aids with lactose digestion, is available in liquid and tablet form without a prescription (Lactaid, Lactrase, and Dairy Ease are familiar brand names). Adding a few drops of liquid lactase to milk before drinking it or chewing lactase tablets just before eating helps digest foods that contain lactose. Also, lactose-reduced milk and other products are available at many grocery stores (Lactaid and Dairy Ease).

If odor is a concern, there is also some reported success with charcoal filter undergarments.

If belching is a problem, you should avoid the behaviors that cause you to swallow air, such as chewing gum or eating hard candy. Eat slowly. Make sure your dentures fit properly if you wear them.

In general, avoid overeating because this contributes to flatulence as well as obesity. Limit high-fat foods to reduce bloating and discomfort. Your stomach will empty faster, allowing gases to move into the small intestine.

You have to figure out what is causing it. Eliminate dairy for a week, and if that doesn't help start eating dairy and eliminate something else. Keep doing this until you find something that helps. If you eat a lot of vegetables and grains, Beano might help (it has an enzyme that helps you digest these things and not get gas). Lactaid will help you digest dairy. If all else fails and this really is a problem, ask your doctor. Some gas is normal, but too much could indicate a problem with your digestive system.

flatulence (or pooting) is not that bad of a thing. its your body's way of getting rid of the excess gas formed by leafy greens (ie-lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, etc) Your body NEEDS these to have the enzymes it needs to keep you healthy! Now if you are having trouble with this, try beano- it seems to work but dont overdo it... you will be in quite some mess- if you are going out and don't want the embarrassment of pooting- skip out on the leafy greens and other fruits and veggies and avoid overeating.... hope this helps

It is also my understanding that flatulence is often caused by swallowing air when one eats. Take note next time you're eating. Are you doing that? If so, try to be more conscientious to not gulp down air when you're swallowing food. (The worst thing to me is being bloated and full of gas, yet not being able to f*rt. If anyone has an answer to that, I'm all ears.)

Buy a jar of Fennel seeds from the spice rack at yout supermarket.

I take a teaspoon, chew them a few times and swallow with a glass of water. Cuts that gas right out!

I've heard that some Indian restaraunts have bowls near the register for customers.

I find the "Dutch Oven" method the most useful. Once this technique is employed anyone who would find the flatulence annoying is gone.
