Although I wouldn't have expressed my opinion quite so harshly, I tend to agree with you.
In addition, it only takes a few extra seconds to "proof" a response by clicking on the "Check Spelling" link added to this entry system.

in school i was taught printing first, then cursive handwriting but never typing. when writing in cursive I sometimes have to stop and print a word out to see how it is spelled. I think that printing, cursive writing and typing are different language skills. That is to say they don't fire up all the exact, same brain cells when being used. Reading and Writing are different skills too. there have been some interesting studies done on this. There was one recently where they discovered that you could write a paragraph
and misspell every word in it. and it could still be understood by everyone who read it. and that is the important thing.
Language is alive and does change. I would hate to have to type using some of the spellings for words that William Shakespeare used. As it is I sometimes get confused between American English spelling and British English spelling. Center and Centre
. And why if English is a Germanic based language is kindergarten nearly the only German word we have not changed the spelling of. argh! do not get me started. hmm is argh spelled with one H or ten ...

I don't know how old you are but the older you get, if you don't use spelling and you rely on spell check, you will forget how to spell, do math, a lot of things that are now being done for us by computers.
