I found it was easier to paint trim first. The reason why is that the trim has a surface that is not flat and I tend to make more mistakes. If you tape the wall to help with the trim paint, the adhesive sometimes makes blemishes on the wall paint. So my favorite method is to use a hand held edge guard and quickly paint the trim. Then I use the same edge guard to cut in the wall paint. I rarely make mistakes this way.

I have painted many rooms, its part of my business.
The procedure that works best for me is, paint the ceiling and the ceiling edges first .
Then paint your walls, I use a tool called straight edge. You know where the wall meets the ceiling?, I can't paint straight lines, so I paint it with that tool and it makes it so much easier, faster and cleaner.
If I am painting around the cabinets I will tape them off with painters tape (its blue).
If you use the right paint, like Kilz (Walmart carries it) you usually only have to use one coat, especially if it is a light color.
After your walls are painted, I tape of the walls at the bottom, where the wall and the trim meet. Make sure you press real hard when applying the painters tape that will prevent runs.
To protect the floor, I will use a piece of cardboard and place it beneath the trim as not to get paint on the floor, you can do this even with a carpet floor.
HOPE this helps, have fun!

I find that it is easier to paint the walls first. Because if you paint the trim first then you will have to tape it off so you won't get paint on it when you do your walls. Also the new paint might come off with the tape when you take it off. Because it is not fully dry. This way if you paint the walls first you will only be taping off just once after the walls dry fully . I would make sure that the surface you are going to paint is free of dust and dirt before you start. Also do it on a dry day .

The walls because the wall paint will splatter some and you'll have to retouch your trim pieces if you do them first. If you miss and get some of the trim paint on the walls usually you are using a smaller brush and there is less to clean up. One other point....if you want to see the most dramatic change first, then paint the walls.

I paint the trim first. Thats the way home improvement books I've read suggested doing it. Then cover and tape up the trim to avoid getting your wall paint on the trim.

First, cut in the walls around the trim, then paint the walls, then the trim. Good Luck. Blue painters tape is highly recommended.

A painter of 30 yrs/ i would suggest the trim first. This way you dont have to be very neat as far as getting any on the wayys. Its much eaiser to cut in the walls and I would suggest spending 10 to 12 dollars on a good trim brush. A 2 to 2 1/2 inch sash bruch is best

its better to paint the walls first, after u paint the walls and its dry u can put a strip of painters tape around the walls and then paint the trim..if u paint the trim first u have to put painter tape around the trim to pain the walls its easier to put the tape on the walls then on the trim...or at least that's what i think.

That depends on whether you are painting the trim to match the walls or the ceiling. If the trim will match the walls, then do it first. If it is to match the ceiling, then do it last, so as to avoid accidental smudges from painting the walls. If your trim is to be a different color from both the walls and the ceiling, I would do it last.
