My son has a small knot under his skin on both legs where he got his shots. Nothing is wrong so I seek no medical attention but I cannot find out why...
Thanks

This commonly happens with babies when they get their shots. It is due to a local reaction to the immunization. Babies don't have much muscle mass and so when they have a mild reaction to the shot, they get little knots where the reaction took place. This is actually a good thing and means their body is doing what it needs to do. When you are given an immunization it causes the bosy to react to it and then if your child is ever exposed to this disease in the futurethey won't get the disease because they already have the antibodies built up in their system to protect them. If it is really raised you may want to put aome warm, moist compresses on it. This really provides lots of relief. If your child is irritable, he or she may be in pain from the shots and you could give tylenol or motrin. It should go away in a few days. Take care.
-- the above response by Mr. PhattPhatt isn't quite accurate. The person who gave the injection did it just fine. If there is a knot, he or she gave it in the muscle. Even if he or she had missed and given it in the fat for example, the immunization would still be absorbed and work. Don't be concerned about that.

Did he get more than one shot in the same spot? With multiple injections at the same site, the skin will harden at the site. (This happens a lot to diabetics with their daily insulin shots. They have to constantly switch sites.)
If he only got one shot at each site, then I would say that it's just regular irritation. It happens and it should go away eventually. And the fact that he's 6 months old may be part of it. His skin is more sensitive than an older child or an adult.
But anyway, if you're worried about it, I would just keep an eye on it.
I'm a nursing student, by the way. We've learned a bit about giving injections in class lately.

It's because the vaccines haven't completely left the injection site and filtered into his body. Give it a few days, it will get to where it's supposed to.
My 4-year old daughter has the same problem whenever she gets a shot of penicillin. There's a lump, but I just rub it out as much as I can, and in a day or two, it's gone.

if it doesnt go away within 24 hrs of the shot, it could mean that the nurse missed the sub-dural space where the vaccination may be absorbed, or that the shot was into an area where vascular circulation is poor. either way the vaccination is of no effect if it is not absorbed, and may cause complications. you have a few days to decide-- no need to panic

he just got stabbed through his leg muscles so, they get knots in them... when he goes back and gets his 1 year shots make sure you rub them really good right after he gets them, he shouldnt have as much noticeable swelling. Also, the rubbin makes the ouchie feel better faster...
