It can be a wonderful experience. I would suggest trying to get tickets that include an aisle seat if you are flying alone. If you are flying with others, then get an aisle seat for you and a window seat for your companions.
The first thing you experience on an airplane is the wait before moving to the taxiway (road leading to the runway). It is often boring and warm as the airplane is just sitting in the sun baking.
The next thing you feel is a lurching motion as the airplane is towed or moves under its own power on the taxiway. You may go right to the runway or may be waiting in a queue and have to stop and start several times waiting to get you turn to depart.
Third is takeoff. The engines will power-up and the aircraft will shake a bit as it picks up speed for takeoff. The airplane will zoom forward and the nose of the airplane will tilt up. The wheels will leave the ground and the shaking will stop. Your ears will feel full of water and chewing gum will help with this sensation.
Now that you are airborne the aircraft will climb rapidly until it leaves the airport area. It will contiune to climb at a slower rate until it levels off at the cruising altitude. the fasten seatbelt lights is usually turned off at this time and you may get up and use the bathrooms and walk around a bit. You should do both even if you do not really need to just to get a look around.
If you are flying with friends, ask them to let you sit by the window now.
Now the airplane will stay at this height for a while until it approaches your destination. At this time the airplane will start a gradual descent. If you are still in the window seat and take off did not make you too upset stay in the window seat. If the take off made you uneasy switch back to the aisle seat.
As the airplane comes down through the cloud layer the view is incredible so if you can stay in the windows seat it is mostly worth the landing view. Chew more gum now!
As the airplane comes into the traffic pattern for the destination airport you may have to circle the airport waiting you turn to land but often you head straight in. The airplane will be slowing down as it flies lower but this is not noticeable. When you can see the ground the earth will look like is coming up to meet you very fast (this is normal.) The earth seems to speed up as you get low and low until the wheels touch down. At this time the engines will make an horrific sound (which is the airbrakes) and will shake and bump as it touches the ground. After a few scary moments the airplane will slow down to a halt and then move off the runway on to a taxiway. It will arrive near the terminal building and you are safely on the ground at you destination.
Unless someone is meeting you take a moment to relax and let everyone else hop up and rush off the airplane. Your baggage will not be ready to pickup if you checked bags for a while so take you time.
Some other hints:
If you are taking carry on bags, put them in a overhead compartment that is in front of your seat and opposite your side of the aisle so you can watch your bag in case someone grabs the wrong bag.
Make you bag on the outside with some tape or ink so that it does not look like every bag in the airport.
Try to get at the front of the baggage line so that you can grab you bag first so that no one nicks-it.
Do not wear a belt or boots the day of travel. Slip ons or sneakers are the shoes to wear.
Loose comfortable clothes will make the trip easier.
Bring magazines to read on the plane. Books are hard to focus on while people move around you.
Bring gum (enough to share)
A snack will be nice short flights often do not provide food or snacks.
For longer flights wear a meal will be served ask for the vegimeal. They tend to be better and less upsetting to the stomach.
Be friendly and professional as a customer. A smile is fine but joking is not really a good idea people very serious these days.
Pack a change of clothes and anything of really value in your carryon it may get looked at but you can always know where it is.

I haven't flown very much and I guess it would be different depending on the plane you flew in. I really enjoyed my first flight that was a demo flight in a small plane. You could feel the air under the wings sort of like when you put your hand out a car door. It was a great experience. My commuting flights in larger planes were interesting for the view. It is a different perspective than you will ever get of our landscape and I really appreciate the speed at which you can arrive at your destination. If you remember what it felt like the first time you drove your own vehicle then you will know what I mean when I say the experience shrinks your world and makes ever thing closer and more accessible. Now if I could only make it cheaper. John

okay.. just some tips.. i need gum when i fly because my ears start to pop or whatever.. and hurt, and the gum ets rid of that. so buy a pack of gum. have some for the trip back too. also a tip.. dont get the middle. either get an aisle seat, or the window. because with the window you can look at the ground, and know you are safe.. some people are scared of the window because then they can see how far up they are though.. and the aisle because then you fell safe because you can easily get to an escape place and you can easily go to the restroom and whatnot.

Make sure you bring a comfortable pillow because the pillows on the airplane usually suck. also, bring a pair of headphones, because most airlines charge about 5 dollars for a pair so you can watch movies. you also might want to bring an mp3 player or an i-pod to keep you entertained. if you get motion sickness, you might want to sit near the bathroom, because turbulence does happen, and you might throw up. also, you should bring a few snacks, because airplane meals aren't always 5 star meals. if your ears feel weird because of the changing pressure, that's perfectly normal, and you should chew gum, yawn and/or swallow to make them feel better. also, if the flight is long distance, the best time killer is to sleep.

have a nice trip

I felt nervous and exicted at the same time. I got butterfly on my stomach, but it turn out be ok. I am about to go on a long trip from Boston to Singapore on early August, and I am getting that same feeling again already.

Enjoy your trip. Be sure to bring some of your own snack. Just in case you getting hungry.

I was terrified the first time! I love the takeoff though. It feels a little weird after you feel that you're lifted off the ground. Also hope there's no turbulence, I almost got sick! Now I think it's pretty neat. Just take something to keep yourself distracted if you start to freak out.

It is one of the best experiences you can go through in your life. I did a discovery flight back in California and it was something else. You're in control of the aircraft and you get to admire the Earth from a different perspective. At the end, the instructor asked me, "so what's better, flying or sex?"

Well if you have motion sickness it's horrible but otherwise it's great. It's so cool to know that you're 6 miles over the earth. It's a good feeling. The thing is not to worry, you'll make it bad when it really is fun.

It is wonderful! Be prepared for some nervousness at the beginning, though. If you're really worried, get an aisle seat. Otherwise get a window seat and enjoy the view!
