I like the design and am looking to buy one, but I would like to know how current owners feel about this car.

I had a '96 ES with the 3.5 V-6 & nicely optioned. I had few problems with it & I drive a car pretty hard. I did the routine maintenance like oil changes, tires, brake job, etc & it was very reliable. It had plenty of power & very roomy. When going to lunch with co-workers, my car was always the one we took because they enjoyed the comfort & ride. I'd put about 130k on it when I traded it in a few years back for an '03 Durango.
The last year of the Intrepid was '04. Here is some info from MSN Autos on the '04 model.

Good luck!

I own a 2001 Intrepid. The ES model. Had it for 3 years now. So far no trouble and it has 86000 miles on it. To check out any car you might want to buy go to epinions.com. They give reviews on all vehicles. The Chevrolet Lumina has one of the highest rating. I was going to buy a Lumina when I bought the Intrepid but I got such a good deal on the Intrepid I couldn't pass it up.

And by the way, it gets 30.4 MPG on all highway driving and around 26 MPG combined driving which I found amazing for that size car.

I HAD an intrepid and like any car it had its pro and cons. Toward then end of its time i had it in the shop more than i was able to drive it though. It drives nice good excelleration is really fast (which can get you in trouble) b/c you dont even realize it. If you want something that gets really good gas milage this prolly isnt the car for you. its not a gas gussler or anything but i averaged about 16 mpg. I had probelms with my thermostat and with my starter all the time and the battery connections are weak on all of them but if you fix these things early or if you buy one used and they have already been fixed i think youd be happy with your new car

I have an older Dodge Intrepid. It runs very well, I'm a college student and I beat the hell out of this car and it still runs great.

My family has had a 99 intrepid for about 6 years. It's been to hell and back but is still pretty dependable. The only major problems we had with it has been our own fault. (i.e. riding the brakes, putting off oil changes).

My sister has one from 2000. It runs fine. Right now the air conditioning doesn't get cold, but that's not because of the model. It doesn't have super mpg, but it's not too bad. Probably around 20-25 mpg.

it's very roomy, btw

One of my dearest friends had one until 2005, and it was a great car, had a powerful engine, nice interior, and a great ride, all you can ask for in a full size car.
