To much of anything is bad for you, not just smoking, but why?
Addiction and Habit is why. Both need to be broken in order to quit. I started with breaking the Habit which helped cut down from 3 packs to 10 cigs a day.
Now to work on the addiction...
So sad ...Cigarettes sucks big time and stink, but then again so does alot of other things. anyone who doesn't smoke and starts now after all the stuff that has been said is straight up Stupid!
No one told me about how bad cigs were when I was young... I was allowed to smoke in front of my parent when I was 12. Ok I am 44. Go figure... My uncle raise tobacco. :( I wish I had never started.
I have a very hard time with the Addiction part.
You are talking about cigarettes, right?
*PC your right... I am a smoker and want to quit badly, but how? I don't know just cut down is as far as I could, hoping to stop soon. I have a hard time breathing in the heat more than any other time. SUMMER is the worse time.

It is a "vice" people grab when they do not know how to deal with or cope with something that needs to be addressed in their life. Just like some take a drink or a pill in order to NOT deal with something. And...of coarse the nicotine you know is addictive. In the same sense, why do people over eat, get drunk, get addicted to medications and oh so many more things. An addiction can be bad in many ways; for instance, gossip, lying, stealing..... it's all the same when you get down to the core. There's a problem and the person is trying to bury it instead of dealing with it by taking on these things of the world. Make sense? Think about it.

People smoke for different reasons, despite the fact they know it is bad for them. Some people find it is relaxing and others do it to relieve their stress in their lives. Some people do it, because they are afraid to gain weight. Some people do it to "fit in" or to be "cool" and are bullied into it. Some people do it because they like to.
Everyone that smokes, knows of the dangers in it. They don't believe that anything bad could ever happen to them.
Smoking is a bad and expensive and a very addictive habit. I hope you never start.
I hope I was somewhat helpful!

about second-hand smoking -- that is true, it's not made up. (how do i know? i have a degree in respiratory care).
when i was younger, because of peer pressure -- i've tried smoking. maybe just once or twice... but smoking it once or twice, doesn't get you hooked up to the habit, or it doesn't become addictive -- smoking it most times of the week (or even everyday) for a couple of months and more WILL lead you down that road.
when you first try smoking -- there's nothing really special to it. first time i inhaled that substance, i coughed. it doesn't taste good, but why do people get hooked to it? it's because of peer pressure. you may noticed that addiction to smoking start when they are in their teenage years. they don't want to feel "left out" so they join the group. they see their friends smoke everyday, so they do too. they think it's cool. (well, it wouldn't be once you're 65) eventually, when they reach their twenties then that's the time they become addicted to it and tough to quit. the habit worsens when they reach their 30's and 40's, and by the time they're about 55 to 65 -- then that's when the side effects take place. with a smoker, once respiratory problems starts to occur, it's irreversible. meaning you canNOT cure it. i've never seen people so desperate looking for cure. well, sorry to say, there isn't. i've seen people suffer, i've seen people die. they usually defend themselves by saying "it's my life" -- unless they have seen what i've seen, they will never understand my point.
i get a lot of negative feedbacks when i encourage people to quit. i was just merely suggesting, and instead they throw anger at me. it's as if im a racist or something. they say stuff like "how dare you dictate to me what i should do and what i should NOT do" -- it is my job to educate people about it, but it is their will to follow it. if they don't want to, then i can't force them. otherwise, if all people stopped smoking, then i would lose my job, don't you think? based on increasing numbers and statistics of people smoking and getting respiratory problems, by around 2009 -- there will be a great demand for respiratory therapists because smoking-related diseases will increase by then. i've seen a patient once who had a tracheostomy tube (you know that hole in the throat that you see in the commercial? -- that's what it looks like without the tube) -- he was a very depressed patient because of the end stages of his disease. but he still smoked (not anywhere near the hospital of course), through the tube. can you believe it? he had this all or nothing attitude. he knew that there is no cure, so he said "im going to die anyway, i might as well smoke" -- weeks later, he died.
trivia: what is the number 1 cause of death among smokers?
clue: it is not emphysema, it is not lung cancer (they rank 2 & 3)
answer: it's heart attack -- about 100,000 people die every year from heart attack because of complications from smoking.

though we know it is bad for our health we do certain things just because we are addicted to it. if all of a sudden smoking is stopped it is very difficult to experience withdrawal symptoms. another reason provided by psychologists is to escape from some psychological problems, some people smoke thinking that it would stimulate their minds another reason is because their parents are smoking they do it as a learned behavior. only aversion therapy can solve this smoking problem.the Freudian explanation for smoking is to prove that they are real men and satisfy one of the biological urges sex with woman

and old doc told me,"as much as we know about tobacco, only a damn fool would smoke today".. it is a rebellion of the spirit thing.. If someone says it is bad, the rebellious brat will light up just to blow it in your face.. The poor idiot will turn green and puke his/her/its guts up and light another just because an authority figgure said it is not smart to smoke. addiction occures faster in tobacco than any other drug. There never is any benefit of any kind to smoking. addictive personalities are too weak to break any habit, usually, so they just go on-- loosing.

People smoke because of several reasons, they need something to do with their hands, and they are very poor and they feel that smoking is a release and they can use their food stamps on it, and it is very addicting, people think that nicotine is a upper and they need that release from their everyday problems.

i ask that same question over and over again to myself also.
it's mainly because they think it's cool. cuz they think everyone is doing it.
they really do know, the dangers of smoking, but they think being cool is more important. and they think they can quit soon, or they wont smoke that much, or something like that. but it's just so sad how people are like that. i hate it so much. but they dummies, they just dont know what they're in for.
below is a website, that might help answer your question.

in the beginning its about peer pressure and fitting in. as your older its called free-nicotine. more addictive than crack, herion or anything. there is over 426 chemicals in a cigarette. the companies make their money by getting people addicted to it. if nictine was listed as a drug and taken out you won't have anything. as big as the industry is and the billions paid to the government in taxes. you think the government would regulate the hand the runs it.
