OK, you have an excellent camera. But ask yourself, why you needed such a high quality in the first place? From your question, it would appear you are a novice, home hobbyist.
Higher resolution is important if you blow up the picture to a wall size (like the ones you see in shopping malls), without distortion.
If you are just taking birthday pics., and keep them in a 4x6 picture frame, this is a overkill. Other than that, a 1meg or a 12 meg take the same quality pictures in small frames. Save money (if you are going to buy one ) and buy a middle of the road camera with features to fit your needs than to be hung up on megapixels.
Camera companies push the idea of Megapixels for competitive reasons. As consumers we have to be more informed as to what we want.

Digital photos are made up of pixels (dots). The more pixels, the higher the resolution.
Twelve megapixels are 12 million dots.
Is a 12 mpix better than a 1? Absolutely.

It's not only Pixels but also depends on the kind of processor, CMOS based or not, & MOST IMPORTANTLY the quality of the lens.
A 12 MP camera is definitely better than 1 MP but it wouldn't have so easy to answer if the comaprison would have been between an 8 MP & 12 mp one. There just being a 12 MP camera being wouldn't have automatically meant a better one as well!!

Yes, it's 12 times better than 1. Megapixals are little small dots that all together make a picture. The same as a TV. The more you use the clearer and sharper the picture. Plus with 12 you can blow up the picture without getting much distortion.
