Crew cut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A crew cut is a type of haircut in which the hair is cut very short. The term was most likely coined to describe the haircut worn by members of the Yale rowing crew.

The crew cut was adopted by the United States armed forces during World War II, and became a civilian fashion for men throughout the 1950s. The cut was felt to be "clean-cut, athletic, and patriotic." [1] By the mid 1960s, the crew cut was generally seen as a mark of conservative political opinions, as opposed to the longer hair styles favored by those less trusting of the government.

A similar style, under the name buzz cut, returned to fashion in the late 1990s.

Chris Mullin, a former NBA player for the Golden State Warriors, had the crew cut in his playing days and still has one to this day.

A crew cut is a military style haircut. Most of the hair is shaved leaving only about 1/4 inch to 3/8'' inch on top. Sometimes a crew cut is also classified as an military haircut where they completely shave your head for boot camp.

It is a very short, almost bristly haircut. It is usually a requirement for Army, Navy, and Marine military men.

I believe that the 2nd person to post a reply was correct in that the Navy and/or Marines had implemented crew cuts around the time of World War II to help signify to which "crew" or branch of service that the person belonged.

It's when all the hair is shaved very short so it sticks up in the air. Imagine a soldier's haircut, according to wikipedia the crewcut has been the standard haircut for the US armed forces since the second world war.
