She is 15, and blind; weighs 15 pounds. We feed her at 6-7A.M and again at 4-5 P.M. We put her out on a leash approx. 7-9 times a day. and walk her a short distance before bed.

Thanks everyone for the great answers. Just so you know, she seems happy. Her tail curls upward and wags a lot. She probably has arthritis, but still moves around OK, especially when she begs for food. We won't let her suffer.

You might try putting a few peices of cat kibble in her pen. Its smell lasts, and may discourage her from pooping where food is.

Bur, as she is quite old, she may not have the conditioning to hold it anymore.

Dogs will not usually poop where they sleep. Given her age, she might not have enough control to make it over night. (7-9 times a day is an extremely large number of times for a dog to need a walk!)
Assuming incontinence is not the problem, it could be the size of her play pen. It may seem very large to her, being old and blind. If the area is large enough and a dog can't get out when it needs to go, many will poop in one corner and sleep in the far corner. This is easily solved. If she can hold it and the play pen is too big, get a carrier-kennel. It needs to be just large enough for her to turn around easily. A knowledgeable salesperson can help you pick the right size.
Finally, your dog only needs to eat once a day. Try feeding her entire days ration in the morning. This will not only give her a chance to poop long before bed, if she is like most older dogs and needs fewer calories, it wil help reduce over-eating.
Good luck.

If you have to poop you gotta poop, its mother nature. Sje os 15 and pretty old for a dog. That puts her aboud the age of 80+ in our years. She can't control her bowels as she used to. You might trying to feed her a bit earlier say, 3pm, and take her for a longer walk around 5 or 8pm so she has a change to poop in mother natures day, be sure to pooper scoop! If she is blind that too is not too good. Shes pretty much stuck in this period of her life and has a hard time controling herself. You may want to put her down. I don't know what breed she is, can't you leave her in the yard at night? Why the dog cage? Try sticking with the 6am feeding too. She is old, blind, in a "cage" at night, she can't be too happy. Talk to a vet, even a phone call, ask about `her age and theproblems in the cage at night! Good luck!

She is old, she can't hold it over night. The same thing will happen to you when you get old. Either get up with her during the night, or learn to live with it.
Perhaps it's time to think about saying goodbye to your little friend?

I just read some of the responses, DON'T feed the dog less. Proper nutrition is very important to senior dogs, and 2 meals is better for her digestion. Not to mention change like that will completely freak her out.

get yourself up in the middle of the night and take her for another walk. its like having a baby. the other option is harsh, but have you considered that she is quite old also may be in pain, and that you should put her down? I'm not trying to be mean its just that if you have a problem with her pooping in her cage in the middle of the night and you don't want to have to deal with it well what else can i say?

She is old and possibly can not hold it very long.
I would put down pads for her to go on or maybe try like a litter box. They make them for small dogs.
My blind dog sleeps in a crate but the door is open and he does not go in the house. But he is not 15 he is only 9.
15 is very old for a dog even a small one.

It might be time to let your family friend go, and take her to the vet for euthanasia - if she is 15, she has had a long life. It sounds like you really love her to take such great care of her, but if she can't control her bodily functions, she is probably not living comfortably.

My dog used to do the same thing. When she had puppies we got her a play pen type thing and she was getting lazy..so we fed her extremely early and like 6 hours before we went to bed and just left he water in the pen(until the pups started climbing in it!) Just make sure she goes potty before you go to bed, a schedule is always the best..Good Luck!

She's getting old and sometimes they just can't wait to go out. Can you get up at least once during the night to let her out? You also might consider a smaller confinement area. Crate her if you have to.
