I recommend staying away with the fads, and don't get a dog just because everyone else has it. You could really have any type of dog you want, your house is big enough for a large dog, but a small dog will make your back yard easier to "de-poop". I would even go so far as to suggest a dog that isn't purebred - my parents have bred different types of dogs since I was small - and the smartest dogs I have ever seen are mutts. You also might want to consider how close you are to children, other animals, etc - if your fence is near a sidewalk or another yard that has a dog, you will want to stay away from breeds that are known to bark alot (which would eliminate most small dogs). In my lifetime, my family or me have owned over 50 dogs, and I can narrow my favourites down to three: one was a golden retriever mix, one was a rhodesian ridgeback mix, and the one I currently have is an australian shepherd mix. All of these were great with kids and cats, and were extremely easy to house-train as well as obedience train due to their intelligence.
I wish you the best of luck in buying a dog!
One last recommendation - if you are buying from a breeder, make sure they have a return policy - if you get the dog home and you know you've made a big mistake, you can still return it.

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized hunting dog. His ancestry comes from hunting dogs of Spain. He was used to flush or "spring" birds from cover. They were recognized as a separate breed from Cocker and Field Spaniels during the late 1800s. They became popular in the United States in the 1920s.
The English Springer Spaniel is friendly, eager to please, quick to learn and willing to obey. He is a gundog with unlimited stamina so he thrives on physical activity.
The English Springer is of medium size, built to cover rough ground with speed and agility. His skull should be flat on top with his muzzle the same length as the skull. The eyes are of medium size, set wide apart. The color of the iris should harmonize with the coat color. The expression in the eyes is one of alertness and trust. The jaws should be square and strong, with a scissors bite. The upper lip should cover the lower lipline but not hang too far below it. The ears are set level with the eye and hang long and wide close to the cheeks. The neck is muscular. He is the leggiest of the springer-type spaniels. The legs are muscular and the feet are webbed for swimming. The back is short with a level topline. From the side, he should appear to be square in build. The tail is docked and carried horizontally. The coat is moderately long and glossy. Acceptable colors include a combination of white with liver or black. The legs, ears, chest and brisket have longer hair or featherings. The average weight of an English Springer is between forty-five and fifty-five pounds while the average height is between eighteen and twenty-two inches at the shoulder. Field dogs may be as much as 5-10 pounds lighter.
****ESS are very intelligent dogs and they can sense things that will astonish you. They are loyal and protective and sometimes even a little jealous. They can understand everything you say and they know how you are feeling. They get upset when you do and they love when you are happy. They know if you are scared and will defend you to the death if need be without even thinking twice or backing down for an instant. They actually seem to think they are humans and they seem to expect you to think they are too. They do get mad and they also get depressed at times, but they can spring right back as soon as you realize something is wrong and talk to them and ask them what is bothering them, spend some time with them and instantly they are back to their old selves. They are amazing animals, and also very beautiful ones too.
They are somewhat better suited to a rural environment, or a home with a large yard, since their energy is boundless. Once properly trained, you can ride a bicycle, and they will “heel” alongside, a great way for both of you to get excersize. Remember to allow them to 'explore', after all, it's THEIR walk.
They can adjust to an in-home environment, but I don't recommend it, since you'd be doing an injustice to the dog. They are great family dogs, and excellent watchdogs. If you leave the house for an hour, when you return expect to be greeted as if you've been gone for days.
There are two types of Springers. Field bred and Bench or Show bred. They are somewhat different visually, although the AKC recognizes them as one breed.
If you are considering owning an English Springer Spaniel, the most helpful tips I can give are these:
1) Someone should be available to be around the dog most of every day, for the first year.
2) Do your homework. Learn how to properly train your dog, and start the day you bring it home.
3) Treat it as a member of the family. Feed it the best food available (no table food) and find a good veterinarian.
Expect your totalannual costs for this family member, to be between$500 -$800.

Any size or breed just about would fit in that space. I have 3 bdrm 2 story house with a moderately large well fenced yard and I have A schipperke, A rottweiler, A german shepherd, and A mastiff. they range in weight from 11 lbs to 170 lbs and range in activity from lazy to minorly hyper and my place fits all their needs. All my dogs are very loving and loyal and gentle. All are rescues. I would choose a dog that you would like as far as temperment and how much time you have to spend grooming ect. The pound is a great place to look for a dog too. You may save a life! Good luck in your quest.

It all depends on what you like and what size home you have a 3 bedroom and 2 bath soucl be very small or very big..your best bet would be going to your local "pound" and checking out which dog gets along with you best. Most "pounds" have meduim sized mixed breeds which is good for either sized home.

It's really a matter of personal prefrence. The AKC website has a profile on the different types of dogs and their personality types. I would check that out before going looking for a dog. Also make sure to check out your local Animal Shelter you can find great dogs there and give them a second chance at a happy home.

Go to the local animal shelter and adopt an adult dog. You won't be hasseled w/ house training, and you will have a grateful, loving companion. Just make sure you are ready to make a commitment for life. The dog is. Good Luck.
