if it was legalized, it can be monitored, we can ensure mandatory testing/blood/hiv. employees involved can be taxed. my opinion is whether your for it or against it its going to be around forever, and it is currently in every country, even the ones if caught the penalty is death. it will also aleviate pressure on the justice system, jails will have more room and police can focus on more important crimes.

The selling of ones own sexuality to others for money as a service is psychologically harmful for the person prostituting them self.
Would you want your mother to enter this occupation? Your sister? Your daughter?
Legalization just frees the victimization of mentally unstable or drug dependent people into this trade. And it frees consumers of this trade to continue participating in that abuse.
Making it 'safer' for the consumer does not interest me at all.

We could benefit from not only prostitution, but also from across-the-board legalization of drugs. Reasons are more money among the open market, which aids the economy in general. It would also reduce the number of people in prisons and reduce crime that immediately results from shady people selling said product(s).

someone always benefits in some way from prostitution whether it is legal or illegal. And legislating against it will never stop it, so why not legalise it and then at least we would have some health and safety controls over it.

Those areas with legalised prostitution still have problems with STD infections as it takes time for the disease to manifest itself. Also, it does send the message that the behaviour is okay. Murder has been around forever, too; should we legalise it?

I think not.

Bad idea. Perhaps you believe that hookers do their biz voluntarily, but the facts are many young girls get forced to ply their trade -- and to legalize it would create many more victims. Also, police, lawyers, and courts would have much more work to do.

Legalizing drugs is in no way similar.

the exact same arguments can be made for almost any activity

heroin use, pedophelia, slavery

the question is really, is it good overall for your society and does your society want to condone it

this ends up being a question of the basic premises you start with and the belief systems involved

No. We would still have the same risks, but we would legally say that we consider prostitution to be an acceptable act.

yes, i believe we would benefit. its better to have it regulated than not. we would benefit bc they would be taxed, more money toward schools, etc......
it will never go away, why not make it a little safer.
of course it will bring new problems. when something is changed it brings new problems. for example; when a person is poor it has its problems. and when it becomes rich it has new and very different problems
