I have a 12 year old outdoor cat, and he just recently moved from where he lived for his whole life to a new house. How long should we keep him in the house before we can let him out safely, with him knowing this is his new residence?

I recommend at least a week or two...if you live too close to your old house, he might try returning if you let him out too soon. Fortunately, if he goes to the old house's door and realizes it's not you who is opening it, he may not want to go inside, and would return to your new house. I had a cat who snuck out the day after we moved and he did eventually come back, but he was away for about a week.

well I would say just to try and make him a house cat...because some people like to come around and take other people's small animals. So for anyway possible I would say just to try and have yout cat get used to you. You don't have to make him a house cat, just have him try and get used to seeing you. Let him out side after words and he'll come back. Some of this can happen some can't.

it depends on the cat. My oldest one (got her when she was 3 mths) got comfortable with the house the same day I brought her home. My youngest took a while longer because he also need to get used to my other cat.
A cat doesn't need to go outside. Especially one as old as 12.

Have his food out for the same times every day. When you decide to let him out (he DEFINITELY needs to be neutered),
have food by the back door and fresh water, so he will know he can always come home to eat. My country cat was not neutered, and he finally came home one day with his leg split
open from a fight. When cats fight, they try to split the other cat's balls. Did you know that?

It took My cat 2 Weeks to get use to our house. My cat was also a kitten when we got it.

They really could care less where they are and if people are with them.Don't really leave him in the house. Maybe you should go out with him every once in a while. So that he can learn he needs to go outside, but you might always want to go out with him!

I would suggest giving him some love and attention both inside and outside. if you keep inside the whole time and then throw him outside then he will get mad or confused.
