I heard this one in Hawaii back in 1994 by a local fishing boat Captain.... it had something to do with fishing being able to smell bannana oil and staying away from the boat and that was supposed to be a natural signal to the fish they were too close to the beach.... basically ... you wouldn't catch any fish. And the oil could stay on the boat for up to a week... that meant a week of no fish or money from them. He actually checked our coolers to make sure no one had banana's or coconuts.

It is bad luck because many ships delivering tons of bannas were mysteriously sinking when they were leaving Argentina it has nothing to do with the peel or smeel since it is also bad luck to have anything with banana in the name such as banana boat sunscreen

Ripe bananas give off Etheline gas and this attracts bugs-especially mosquito's.
