A mood swing is an extreme or rapid change in mood. They are commonly associated with mood disorders, of which the classic example is bipolar disorder.

Other causes of mood swings are due to hormonal changes that can temporarily upset brain chemistry, such as during PMS, perimenopause, menopause or puberty. As the hormones involved normalize, these mood swings generally subside on their own.

Women have a right to attribute mood swings to hormonal changes and PMS; there is biological evidence linking one's mood to their menstrual cycle. However, women go too far by tacking their "Leave me alone" posters to their chests a week before their period. Don't worry, we'll cross that red carpet soon.

Hormones aren't the only likely cause of mood swings; women can go from happiness and motivation to irritability and lethargy due to the uncontrollable stressors in their lives.

Well for some people, it's hard to define since everybody is different!
HaHaHa...But a mood swing is basically when your mood changes often at times...
F.E: Your talking to your friend and having a great time, then you just get mad and bored, and maybe later you feel sad...
Usually it happens when your pregnant, or going through puberty, but sometimes it can happen to anybody!

It is when you alternate between extreme emotions. For instance, you can be very happy for a time and then dive into depression (for no reason). You can also alternate between good mood and irritability. My husband is bi-polar and has rapid cycling, which means he swings between moods from hour to hour. Other people can be in one state for days or weeks and then swing to the opposite mood.

If you're really happy but the next minute you feel sad without any clear reason. I guess that's what a mood swing is.
