Kind of how we always land on our hands no matter how we fall. The body's subconsciou defense kicks in and knows what to do to avoid as much injury as possible.

PS: Cat's don't ALWAYS land on their feet. My cat's landed on his head or side numerous times.

Cats are able to land on their feet when there is enough "airtime" to allow the cat to twist and fanagle it's body around. I've seen some pictures going step-by-step how a cat twists and turns. The key to it though is to allow the airtime for the cat...not enough airtime=not landing on its feet!!

They have inner balance that tell to land on their feet. When the equilibrium tell them something's wrong they always twist around to "correct" that balance.

Cats do not *always* land on their feet.

While they are incredibly agile, and their body-structure allows them to turn quickly in mid-air, if they are dropped from a not-high-enough height, they will not *always* land on their feet.

It is anatomy, not *magic*!
