Yes, but it usually happens when awakening from a dream. When a person sleeps, they enter a different state of consciousness. Usually during R.E.M. sleep, Brain activity rises which can be a sign that the person is dreaming. The conscious mind ceases control of motor functions and the cerebellum takes control of breathing and the other involuntary movements that goes with sleep. When you wake up from a dream conscious mind has not taken full control of your body, leaving you in a slight state of paralysis, even in breathing. You know that you want to get up, but your mind just has not fully left the trance of sleep. This state usually does not last longer than 5 sec.

It could mean you are still tired and half asleep still in a dream. It could be some kind of sleep paralysis or if you had a busy day or night before you went to bed then your bones ache making it unable to move your body. This did happen to me once i had been out all night and when i came home to go to sleep the next morning my cousin had to help me up because i could not move.

When you are asleep and dreaming, your body is paralyzed so you don't act out your dreams.Sometimes we awaken from this dream state, however we cannot move(due to the paralysis). It is scary...it happens to me a few times a month.I usually try to get at least one finger or a toe moving. When I do mange to fully awaken,I get up and do not go back to bed for at least an hour.

I read an article on line about a year ago. It has something to do with your brain and researchers think it's why people report alien abductions. I can't remember specifically if they said what caused it but I do remember the article saying that it's treatable. I would definitely mention it to your doctor and make sure it's not something more serious.

if it's the same as what happens to me sometimes, it can be known as sleep paralysis.

sometimes i wake up, normally from a nightmare, and i can't move at all. i try to call out to my partner and inside my head, i'm shouting but all that comes out is a faint whisper. and i can't even turn my head to look at him.

i'm awake and i have to struggle really hard to move my body but eventually i can move it.
