The Volvo 122---no contest. The P1800 is fun to look at but wretched to drive---call it a "sports truck" maybe, and it has troublesome overdrive, worthless oil cooler and dash gauges that fail constantly.
The 122 is a balanced sturdy attractive car that will easily outhandle the truck-like 240 series, yet shares the 240s basic sturdiness. Also it does not have the cheesy interior of the 240 with its terrible leather and knobs falling off everywhere.
What you don't want is a 122 automatic with the dreaded Borg Warner transmission. The sweetest 122 would be the 123 GT.

Diehard Volvo fans will most likely say either the 240 or any rear wheel drive Volvo. I suppose it depends on what "best" means. Reliability wise, any rear-wheel drive 4cyl. powered Volvo. Best Volvo in terms of comfort, luxury, and performance, definitely the 850 T5-R. This car was the fastest production family sedan/wagon on the market at the time with a top speed of 160mph.

All rear drive volvos were best evers for their time. from the 960 back to the 444 they have been solid cars that have been easy to work on and reliable to own and a pleasing experiance to drive, if not fast at least well.
