I just recently bought one of the Littermaid Ultras. My cats like it, but they still love their regular litter boxes and they still seem to use those more. Those are Booda Domes. They are stylish and easy to clean. You can get them at Petsmart for about $20.
I used Tidy Cats and Fresh Step crystals for years. But I recently switched back over to Tidy Cats clumping in the red box.

Best litter box: Purina Second Nature for a dog, Littermaid for a cat
Best litter: World's Best Cat Litter. Flushable, absorbs odors extremely well (rather than covering them up), clumps great, and is actually edible since it's made from corn (no toxicity issues here, just in case).
World's Best is on the pricier side, but we've found it to be well worth it. A 17lb bag costs us $20 and lasts us about a month. (We have two 20lb pugs who use the litterbox, so that should show you how long lasting the litter is).
Hope this is helpful!

If you haven't purchased one already, I recommend any type of litter box with a full lid, not just the plastic edge around it. There are some litter boxes that are curved at one end, so you literally tip the litter box on its side, and all the clumps of litter end up in a little drawer for disposal. I also recommend clumping cat litter - and if you use any of the brands that say "odour absorbing" or anything meant for multiple cats, it will work really well.

I've got two and I find that Fresh Step is the best litter. For their litter box, I use really deep aluminum baking pans. At the end of the week, I just throw the whole thing away - no need to clean it. Just be sure to scoop it everyday though.

I have three cats and i have to change their litter every day. That's why I like to use anything that clumps. The cheapest brand that clumps works for us. At the end of the day, you can just go and scoop out anything they they left in there for you and put in in a bag and take it right out to the trash. The smell is gone and the litter is clean and fresh for them to use again.

IMO the best kitty little is scoop away unscented. I have 2 cats & you NEVER smell the cat box when you are in my house... even when I don't clean it for a week.
I have a 3 peice litter box with a built in sifter... so you never have to touch the kitty litter when cleaning. Don't know if thats the best kind, but it works for me (I HATE cleaning cat boxes!)

Fresh Step Crystals. Lasts a month for one cat. I had four cats at one time and one bag lasted a week. More expensive than normal litter, but worth it to keep odor and time-consuming litter changing under control.

the best litter that we use for our "big" kitty is MAX litter..it's the ONLY ONLY one that works as well as litter can work...it's great stuff..I tried the cheaper route, and the smell was enough for me not to make the same purchase..and I actually got a very big "condo" kitty litter box..I didn't even know they came bigger than standard...at pet stores only, though...I am not sure if department stores carry them *I haven't seen them, anyway*
