Most pdf software installs a printer. So any application which can print can used to create a pdf document based on the applications content, like internet explorer. web pages can be printed to pdf and stored on your harddrive.
PDF creator qworks like this. Finish the document you want to complete in word Go to file and select the printer created by pdf creator and click OK
Open Office.org also has PDF suport but it's a large download

Go to Adobe page, I think they provide a free trial to convert 5 documents.
