For the hearing impaired, instead of audible signals from alarms, phone, etc, you can get, or rig up yourself a light system that will light up instead of ,or can work in conjunction with audible signals.

Here's a suggestion, try using a smoke detector that isn't just sound based. I found this one, but it is a little expensive. I hope though that you'll never have to use it if you catch my drift. Good luck finding one though.
