Residencies are notoriously hectic and draining. Whatever it is that your friend likes to do to kick back and relax, that's what you should get.
A gift certificate to a spa is probably a great idea. Few people treat themselves to a pedicure or a massage, but would go if someone had already paid for it for them.

Of course, you could get him/her a subscription to a popular psychiatry journal. It's something (s)he will need to get anyway, but may not have thought of yet.

And flowers. Everyone loves to get flowers, and it's a nice way to give a gift certificate, gift card or subscription notice: tucked into a bright bouquet of flowers.

Anything other than.. medical related stuff...
Here's some ideas..
Stuff their refrigerator with food..
hide a twenty in their shirt or pants and attach with a note..
take them to a massage therapist
gift certificate from Starbucks...
Anything that makes life sweeter and less stress free!!!

This is a great gift! Sometimes, my friends and I make mix tapes or CDs of the music that we like, and for me, it is always interesting to try someones' taste in music. Plus, it's really personal and thoughtful!

Get a gift certificate for a nice restaurant because they have no money after all of their school bills.

If it's a female....gift certificate for a day at the spa.......and if it's a guy who plays golf.....pay for a day on the local course.....and something that is gender neutral......a sign for their office door saying "In Session"

-throw him/her a nice party with other friends who know this one has completed residency. take up a collection from the partygoers to chip in to help pay down a student loan balance.
