What role should communities/cities/counties/states play in forestalling the trend of illegal hiring? Can citizens bring suit against businesses if it's found that they have illegal employees?
Would revoking some business licenses start heading things back in the right direction?

I think there needs to be strict enforcement. Now ICE is bringing criminal charges against employers in their raids. They could have done that at any time, but don't.

I think the disconnect is the ID database which needs to be up and running so that employers can reasonably be held to a high standard. The social security card forgeries are pretty good, I understand. Once employers can check a database to find out if a person is legally here, or is reported to be working 10 other places already, we can feel more fair about really cracking down on them.

The Senate Bill says it will take 18 months to get the database up and running at least as to immigrants. The House Bill says it will take SIX YEARS.

However, while everyone focuses on employers, the benefits like in-state tuition etc bring at least as many across, in my opinion. Once we secure the border and decide what to do with those here, we have to dismantle all of those benefit magnets, as well, in my opinion.

Employers can check on a person's past employment record. If a person has a SS# and suddenly there is no record of it or the types of employment are totally different, it might be a good idea to check with the Social Security Office to see if it is a valid I.D. and get some idea on the person that number was originally given to. Especially if there is a reason to believe it is fake or stolen, and the applicant is foreign (speaks broken or no English, does not give information on past employment or past whereabouts). Watch for clues. There is suppose to be a tamper-proof I.D. card given to documented non-citizen immigrants in the near future.

Employers who are known to hire illegals should be warned and then fined heavily. They know the problem and should do everything in their power to assure the person they are hiring is not here illegally.

Our county welfare offices should be absolutely sure they are not giving aid to illegal immigrants. They need to check any suspicious person out thoroughly, their past employment, where they have lived, criminal records, children's schools, past tax documents, etc.

If there is reason to believe someone is illegal and it's pretty good evidence, I believe citizens should be able to alert the authorities.

Revoking a business license for a business is kind of a worthless task. Most businesses operate legally without a business license. The local township's people where the business operates should go to their Mayor's next council meeting, and put in front of them the problem, and what you intend to see that they are not re-elected, if they do not take action. When local Mayor's council meetings are held, so few citizens ever attend, so they are just ignored, and the council does what it pleases. It is your choice to stop them through participation, and it always has been.

Where I worked there was a bust 32 Mexican people using the same social security number that one of them actually acquired legally. I never heard what happened to the company. I think just a slap on the wrist, but they should have been fined harshly!!! How can you not realize 32 people are using the same ssn? Come on! Anyway all the illegals got a swift return to Mexico and the one who's number they were using got to stay. (He let them use that number he should have been fined too! or deported!!) But I saw 4 of the people that were deported about a month and a half later, can we say border patrol?!!!

Sorry big business has bigger muscles $_$. They tried it in Nebraska meat packers. Rounded up all the illegals and deported them. The meatpackers were unable to fill the positions. I posted a question on this, and everyone said they couldn't fill the positions because they don't pay enough. They start you at $8 an hour. I know their are plenty of persons collecting welfare that could have filled these positions.

I think that the business owners and/or the hiring staff should be criminally prosecuted. I think that the charge should be comparable to aiding a criminal. I think that both that it should be a felony and that imprisonment and fines be applied if it is found that the employer knowingly hired an illegal immigrant.

Meaningful fines that would make hiring an illegal work force impractical (paying more in fines then what they are saving by using illegals)..say around $100,000 at least per violation (each illegal worker found).

our role as an American is to be very thorough with the background check before hiring anyone. test in reading and comprehension in ENGLISH should also be a pre-requisite to hiring new employees.

The entire HR Dept should be jailed.
If its a small business, then owner should be jailed.
