though the specs etc are through the roof these days compared to what you might have paid whopping amounts for in the past, cheap still doesn't mean good
i've paid £800 for mine, after comparing specs, capabilities and shopping around, and it's just right. not the cheapest bargain bucket £350 machine that's been slapped together with spare parts, neither some kind of £1500 luxury yacht where you're paying mainly for the name.
A cheap one will be bulky, heavy, have a duff screen, poor keyboard, run hot and have a noisy (distracting) cooling fan (partially the fault of a slow but inefficient CPU & chipset), not last long on it's battery, have a poorly performing hard disc, not enough memory for the programs that are installed and a dicky setup/software complement ----- typically anyway. Shop around and you MAY strike lucky. In that kind of price range though, you may as well go to ebay and see what you can get second hand that's similar or slightly better specced, simply 6 months older from a more prestigious brand.
that said, Acer machines are generally well regarded as being excellent value, but their reliability and customer support is supposedly lacking of late.
Wouldn't touch Dell with a bargepole.
The Panasonic and Phillips laptops being sold in PC World appear to be excellent value and quite well built. Can't vouch for their usability or reliability but they're quite attractive. If the HP I now have hadn't caught my eye I probably would have had one of them (at £200-300 less!).
* No trouble with HP so far, a couple little teething niggles but the HP technical support have been fantastic at helping me with them. Nothing that's stopped me using the machine or even affected the use much - just e.g. having to restart it twice from standby to wake the screen up :)
PS Yes.... it's maybe not an obvious tip... but try PC World. I would have thought them to be rip-off merchants hawking terrible gear, but have been proved joyfully wrong.

If you are really short on cash buy a refurbished or surplus laptop. The company I work at used to sell used laptops at $200 (they now lease equipment instead). Check out the classfied or on-line. Don't buy an HP. I have bought one new, hard drive crashed 1 month after the warrenty expired. When I took it in to be repair at a local shop they had some pretty negative comments about HP. Toshiba and Dell are OK. If you are not too short on cash go through laptops on amazon.com by price and by rating.

The cheapest will be the ones you find in a pond shop or at a second hand store.

I bought myself an Acer Aspire 1642WLMi about 4 months ago and what can I say. It's ideal for home use and not too expensive either. It does more than enough for home use and it's wi-fi enabled. Rough price £499. Hope this helps.

If you're looking at a processor, you need to compare its clock speed and the number of cores and other technologies it boasts like hyper threading.
When buying a computer, compare ram, the graphics card memory and processor and price and go for the one with the highest numbers that fits your budget.
