There are 4 ways of getting to Chiangmai from Bangkok. One is fly. Flight time about 1 hour. There are a few domestic airlines that do this. You can easily but a ticket from the domestic terminal and will cost you about 1500-2500 bahts one way, depending on which one you choose. You can choose from the followings for the schedule and price:

www.nokair.com
www.fly12go.com
www.bangkokair.com
www.thaiairways.com

The other way is to take a train. Head to the train station at Hua Lam Phong. The underground MTR will get you there easily Sorry I do not know the cost. of the trip. But as I understand from some tourist who tried this, it is not that comfortable.

The third means is to take the inter-province bus. You have to board it at Northern bus terminal in Kamphang Phet, near Chatuchak. Ask the locals as there are a few bus terminals in the area with different destinations. Ask for the one that heads to Chiangmai. Cost is low, air-conditioned coach with stops along the way. Takes about 10 hours. More comfortable than the train.

Last means is to hire a car and drive there. Just stay on Highway 1 and this should take you there. About 7 hours straight drive. :)

So now you know your choices. Have fun whichever way you choose. Chiangmai will be a nice change from Bangkok, for sure.

Take the overnight train. It costs about 600 baht for an air conditioned second class bunk bed. Bottom bunks are usually better. It's not the Ritz but certainly comfortable enough. Best of all, it saves you a night at a hotel and gives you a day to sightsee rather than sit in transit.

Bring earplugs and a sweater. Sometimes the AC is on a bit too high or blows right on you.

The bus is certainly the best way to go.. As mentioned, go to the Northern Bus Terminal - in Thai language Mo Chit - every taxi will know of this - the first class busses are very nice, a/c, very comfortable and not terribly expensive by Western Standards - - maybe $15.. I have made this trip to Tak on a regular basis. Tak is about 2/3 of the way to Chaing Mai and if you want to break up the trip, it makes a lovely inexpensive stop over.. very nice small city and not touristy - just pleasant ole Thailand. - - I have a car now, and live in Tak Province, but the bus is a good and easy way to at least see the country - - go early morn - many departures after 7 am.. - and if you want to stop in Tak, feel free to contact me.. have a great journey..

Chiang Mai is up from Bangkok. You can get there by plane or train. Both easy and inexpensive.

If you take the train, make sure they have a karaoke car. We had the best time drinking and singing with the other travelers and the ladyboy karaoke host. I was hating life in the morning, but it was so much fun!
