Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.

It means if you give a person food directly, you only feed him for as long as that amount of food lasts. But if you teach him how to get his own food for himself (teach him how to fish, hunt, farm, etc), with this skill he will be able to feed himself for the rest of his life.

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but teach a man how to fish and he will be fed for a lifetime. It just means that if you teach someone it will help them forever instead of just helping them once.

Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day; teach a man to fish, and he'll feed himself for the rest of his life. It is a Chinese Buddhist saying. It means that if you give, for example, the poor money, they can survive a little longer, but if you teach them you won't have to give them any more money; they will get on their feet and support themselves for the rest of their lives. It is a very true quote.

Teach him to fish, and he'll eat for (I forget the rest ... a year, the rest of his life, something like that).

It means that if you give someone something he needs, he'll be temporarily satisified, but it's better to teach/give him the ability to get what he needs on his own.

It makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately it's often used by conservatives as a condescending remark about people who require social services, without addressing how to give those people the means to make their own living.

Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for life.

This means that free hand outs do nothing for a person but sustain their immediate needs. It does not help them overcome what ever obstacles that they are facing. But by investing time into them and teaching them that they have the necessary tools to do the job they are then empowered to move forward in life.

Anyhow the real quote is from Chinese Proverb by Lao Tzu, i.e "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime". It means it is good to learn something that is useful for leading your day-to-day life, then you don't want to beg in front of others for something.

It means if you teach him how, he'd manage to be independent and support himself (for food, in this case) for the rest of his life.
