Why do people not be honest to each other in any relationship (family/spouse)?

Most of us say we want people to be honest with us and in many cases that is true. But we really don't want folks to be completely honest. Here is an example: You spent most of the day getting ready for a big event you had been planning for a while. Went out got you had did up, new dress make just right. Then you ask you husband what he thinks. If he tell you honestly that it looks like crap then he is consider mean. But if he tells you you look great then he is not being honest at all.

I think people generally lie to avoid pain/hurting someone or some people lie because they think they're getting away with something, and avoiding the truth helps people at times to deal with the present.

What is frightening is the people who always lie. I think in general someone like this truly does not know who they are as an individual. They just don't know where they fit in in the world, and usually don't realize their actions can at times have harsh consequences. Usually when you lie to others, you are really only lying to a reflection of yourself in the mirror...as you are not doing yourself any favors, in the end. IT's sad. I would think constant lying would be a major emotional/physical drain.

And I've found people who are generally more honest in their lives, and relationships...are so much more productive in life...in their dreams, and just happier.

Because being honest makes them vulnerable. Honesty reveals the true things inside and if someone dislikes or rejects what is true on the inside that hurts a lot more than if they reject some mask we wear.

speak for yourself. my husband and I are very honest with each other about everything. perhaps you're with the wrong spouse if he's not being honest with you.
