Do you think in English when you talk in English? Translating words and thoughts as you go is not very effective and it creates problems. I have learned a couple of other languages and I guarantee a stumble if I translate word for word. The best thing is to keep going and to keep using it. There will be times that you say the wrong thing, but people around should understand and cut you some slack.
Being cautious about slang and humour is a good thing because they are the last to come in the learning of a language.
