Prozac is more for depression. In some people it can cause panic attacks. Paxil is more widely prescribed for anxiety.

I had horrible panic attacks for several years, which I now know was caused by Lyme Disease (then undiagnosed). I began taking Zoloft for them, and they decreased immediately, then disapeared. They were debilitating for a while, especially when I was driving. I did switch to prozac, but they came back (though not as strongly) So if one medicine doesn't work for you, keep trying others-- sometimes it takes some experimentation on your doctor's part and a couple of tries (and patience) to find out what works for you. Hang in there-- Panic attacks are so frustrating! There are so many people that have them, but so few talk about them, because they're embarassed. Don't be...it's just a phisiological difficulty, just keep looking for solutions!

I strongly suggest that you destroy your own panic attacks, I know how you feel. I have social anxiety and I can't go out in public without feeling like I am going to die, yes, some prescription medications do help, however, in the end it is up to you to help yourself overcome the many obstacles of anxiety and random panic attacks. First, stop thinking!! I know that sounds somewhat cliche and almost impossible, but it's true. Do something to escape your surroundings, break free from routine. There's no reason to fear. There are other medications that help much better with such disorders.

Katie - I suggest you check with a psychiatrist (they prescribe all types of medications for mental disorders). They are very skilled and knowledgable. Unfortunately, no one knows knows how they will react to a medication until they've taken it. My friends/family have changed from those to Lexapro which has virtually no side effects and is extremely effective. Talk to your doctor and see if you can be referred to a psychiatrist. If you're already working with a psychiatrist, maybe ask them what they see as the most common side effect for someone of your age, sex, etc. and take their suggestion. Either way, it will take several weeks for the medication to get into your system and start working, so don't get frustrated or lose hope. Sometimes, it just takes a while.

It can, in some situations,be effective at treating these conditions. It also comes with a LOT of nasty side effects. I would exhaust all of the other options such as therapy, behavioral desensitization and such. Prozac is nasty business so before you put something like that into your body be sure that it is the last option.

prozac is for depression. Its a selective serotonin uptake inhibitor.
So,it calms you and lifts your mood but if you have a panic attack I would recommend taking xanax because its fast acting,
