21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Its not talking about mountains literally, a mountain is anything that stands in the way of you doing what God would have you to do. Although God can move a real mountain, you have the power through him to do anything.

Not literally of course. It's a metaphor.

I like that Alfred E Newman philosophy. I wonder if he was a Christian?

"Don't worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel. Philippians 4:6-7

As to your question, Jesus was for the most part speaking figuratively. He was saying that when we face mountains of opposing circumstances in our lives we can trust in God to make us overcomers. That doesn't mean that we couldn't believe in God to actually move a mountain however. Jesus said if you believe that your prayer is according to God's will then believing you will receive what you have asked for.

That type of "mountain moving" faith is a gift given to believers by the Holy Spirit for specific circumstances. If someone attempts to move a mountain just to test God then they are commiting the sin that the Devil tried to tempt Jesus to commit.

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Matthew 4:5-7

Yes, but please relaize that many religions have long since explained the figurative nature of scripture. If you look at the hostiry of religion, and Christianity in particular, you can see the faithful have in fact moved mountains. This is not done easily or all at once, but one has only to look at the cathedrals of Europe, all made before any sort of modern tools, to see how mountains of rock can be moved to create homages to God.

The other way to look at this is simple. Just like in Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back, when Yoda is training Luke and he can't move the X-wing. Luke says "I don't believe it" and Yoda smiles becuase he knows that is the problem. To some extent, we are all doubting Thomas's these days when it comes to the grand mirales of the odl testament, and maybe that is God's way of developing our faith in Himas well as in ourselves, instead of just having us believe in Him, and not our own abilities.

Hi There,
I'm a believer, so from my point of view, when Jesus said that, he meant no matter how big are your obstacles in life, you can overcome them with the help of God, by praying ,meditating, living a true christian life.....he did not mean of course to push a mountain, what would you gain from pushing a mountain, except maybe get your name in the Guinness record...:)

And the best humans can do is bend spoons.

And Uri Geller is Jewish. Oy vey!

Seriously, of course it's meant to be taken literally. It's an impossible objective, meant to show Christians no matter how much faith they think they have, it's never enough. And so far no one else has walked on water or raised the dead, either (unless you count Dick Cheney's doctors).

I just want my pony. *sniffles*

And, exactly what's with this mustard seed thing anyway? How do you tell how "big" your faith is? Seems like a convenient little loop hole to me - "Well if it didn't happen, then your faith must be smaller than a mustard seed... even if we're not sure how to measure how big or small that is... or even how to measure how bonkers all of this sounds in the first place..."

If you try, you'll give yourself a hernia. In order to understand the above passages, you'll need to go to the end of the bible to read the small print where it says "the bileble and god are based on fictional characters and any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental".
