I'm not sure if it's a chemical or a hormone (maybe a hormone IS a chemical?) Anyway most of the people here have got it right .. it's produced in our brain and has an uplifting effect on our moods, and yes, being in the sun somehow enhances it.
A pharmaceutical version of it is sertraline, and this is what is in "SSRI" (serotonin something re-uptake inhibitor .. whatever that means) antidepressants like Zoloft or Serlift. I'm not sure if it's used for treating bi-polar disorder (what used to be called manic depression) but it is extensively used to treat the regular old type of depression.

It is the natural chemical your brain creates to induce sleep. When you are around a lot of light, your levels drop. When it is darker, you start to produce more of it. It can be taken as a supplement, and certain foods can help you produce more of it, but you won't find any in food, itself. A recently published study showed that eating a small portion of cheese before bedtime could help induce deeper sleep. I personally tried a "natural" method for inducing sleep. Turn the lights down low a couple of hours before bedtime. Your body will start producing more seretonin and make you drowsy. It helps.

Serotonin is a drug/hormone, it makes you swell up and raise your blood pressure. If you produce too much in your bloodstream, the cure is antihistamine
