Ray Bradbury wrote a science fiction story about that, some decades ago. I don't remember it well. Everyone in the world -- except the children, I believe, woke up one morning and came to be aware that they had all had the same dream the night before -- that the Maker would end the world that next night. The husband and wife on whom the story centers quietly went about their day, got things in order, and when bedtime came, kissed each other good night. However, the husband left the water running in the bathroom sink.
